This blog began as a log of our summer 2009 road trip to all the Major League Baseball ballparks and a few other baseball themed stops. I will continue to update it with posts about ballparks and other baseball related things we experience.

Smashed Pennies: Lion Country Safari
Visiting the gift shop was one of the highlights of the walk through part of Lion Country Safari. Not only because Mik got his lion here, but also because they had a penny smashing machine. Mik and I both got one with a lion head image. Mik also got one with an image of a gorilla. Around the border of both designs it says Lion Country Safari 1967-1997, West Palm Beach, FL.

Smashed Pennies: National Museum of American History
At the National Museum of American History Mik and I each got a smashed penny. The designs seem to be the same as they always were, but the machine is one of the newer ones that cost $1 per penny. The one I got says National Museum of American History Kenneth E. Behring Center and has an image of the museum building. Mik chose the Spark Lab one that says National Museum of American History Lemelson Center.

Smashed Penny: Georgia Aquarium
At the Georgia Aquarium Mik and I got the same smashed penny design. We went with the simple design that has the Georgia Aquarium’s G logo. It is a pretty interesting logo, though, as the G is made to look like a fish and there are air bubbles in front of it.

Smashed Penny: Betsy Ross House
When I quickly went into the Betsy Ross House to see a small Play Ball exhibit on July 8, 2009, I got a smashed penny in the gift shop. Mik did not go in, so he did not want a smashed penny from here. The only one I got ended up being a rather pathetic smashed penny, as it did not end up working out very well. It does have the design of the 13 Star Betsy Ross Flag, but it has the words Betsy Ross House Philadelphia barely on it.
Smashed Pennies: Independence Visitors Center
At the visitor’s center for the Independence National Historic Park back on July 8, 2009, we found a penny smasher machine with a few designs. All of the designs have a back design that says Independence! Visitor Center. Mik and I both got the same two designs here.
One has an image of the Liberty Bell with a star border. I am not sure what is up with it have the six stars in the middle, but there are 13 stars on the top border and 13 on the bottom border, which seems to symbolize the 13 original colonies or might just be a coincidence.
The other design has the more normal dotted border. In the center is a design with Independence Hall in the center. Around Independence Hall it says City of Firsts Philadelphia.

Smashed Pennies: New York
At a travel plaza stop on the I-87 in New York on our way from Toronto to the hotel in New Jersey we found a penny smasher that had a Yankees design. I was not sure if we would find one at the Yankees, so Mik and I got one there. It turns out Yankee Stadium has some machines, but we did not spot them and they are also $1.01 per penny compared to what used to be the norm of $0.51 per penny. Mik also got a We Will Always Remember Twin Towers penny.

Smashed Pennies: Niagara Falls
At Niagara Falls the other day we found a smashed penny machine near the visitor’s center that had a movie theater and a food court. I choose the design with the Rainbow Bridge that also said Niagara Falls State Park. Mik was busy eating some rainbow sherbet, so I choose for him. I got him the design with the Nikola Tesla statue.

Smashed Penny: Mall of America Pablo the Penguin
Mik spotted a penny machine when we first got to the Mall of America, but it just had Spongebob characters. That got me to paying attention, though, and I ended up finding a machine with a penny featuring Pablo, who is a penguin character in Nick Jr’s The Backyardigans show. Being a penguin lover I just had to get it for my smashed penny collection. It says Nickelodeon Universe and Mall of America. The image is of Pablo on what seems to be a carousel horse.

Smashed Penny: Avenue of the Giants
At the Avenue of the Giants there was a gift shop near the end of the drive that had a smashed penny machine. It only had the one design, so Mik and I got the same penny this time. The design has images of redwoods and says Avenue of the Giants along the top and says California Redwoods on the bottom.

Smashed Pennies: Jelly Belly Factory
The Jelly Belly Factory had two smashed penny machines and Mik and I each got one penny. Mik chose the one with a Jelly Belly guy riding a skateboard. I chose the one with a Jelly Belly guy carrying an American Flag. Both pennies say Fairfield, CA, where the Jelly Belly Factory is located.

Smashed Pennies: San Diego Automotive Museum and San Diego Model Railroad Museum
Our first smashed pennies of the trip we got back on Friday at the San Diego Automotive Museum and San Diego Model Railroad Museum. At the San Diego Automotive Museum I got one with an image of a 32 Ford and Mik chose the design with the 2006 Lamborghini.
While we technically did not go to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum we did spot the machine when we went to lunch in the cafe above that museum. There I got one with the a Model Railroad Museum logo and Mik got one with a conductor image.
